χʷəχʷéy̓əm Indigenous Collection is now available at Richmond!

Last week, KPU Richmond Library opened our χʷəχʷéy̓əm Indigenous Collection space. The collection, curated by Indigenous Engagement & Subject Liaison Librarian, Rachel Chong, aims to make Indigenous authors, history and culture more accessible, and the space itself features details that honour Indigenous knowledge, ways of thinking, and art.  The name χʷəχʷéy̓əm, means oral storytelling in the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language.

χʷəχʷéy̓əm features books, artwork, jewelry, clothing, and furniture. In the future, the collection will also feature QR code links to oral storytelling recordings by KPU Elder in Residence, Lekeyten.

The opening event featured words from Rachel Chong, Lekeyten, and Métis artist Jennifer Lamont, creator of the fabric design used on the chairs in the space.  Richmond’s χʷəχʷéy̓əm opening follows the opening of the χʷəχʷéy̓əm space at KPU Surrey last year.

χʷəχʷéy̓əm Langley will be hosting an Open House this Thursday

This Thursday, January 19, join us for an Open House to mark the opening of the χʷəχʷéy̓əm Indigenous Collection at KPU Langley Library. Drop in anytime between 10 am and 2 pm to browse the collection, tour the space, view the artwork, and enjoy some hot tea and coffee. Indigenous Engagement Librarian Rachel Chong will be there to answer questions and chat.

After visiting the space, we welcome you to join us as we project the next Provost Presents in the library computer lab. In this edition of Provost Presents, Diane Purvey is hosting Metis writer Jean Teillet, author of The North-West is our mother: the story of Louis Riel's people, the Métis Nation. To hear Jean Teillet speak of her work, visit the Langley Library computer lab from 11:30 – 1:00 pm. For more information on Jean Teillet’s book, visit this page.

We look forward to seeing you!
