Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This guide provides information about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Goal 5: Clean Water and Sanitation

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Despite some improvements, progress in water and sanitation remains insufficient. At the current speed, in 2030, 2 billion people will still live without safely managed drinking water, 3 billion without safely managed sanitation and 1.4 billion without basic hygiene services.

In 2022, roughly half the world’s population experienced severe water scarcity for at least part of the year. One quarter faced “extremely high” levels of water stress. Climate change worsens these issues, posing significant risks to social stability. While 153 Member States share transboundary waters, only one region is on track to cover all transboundary rivers, lakes and aquifers with cooperation arrangements by 2030.

Sustainable management of water resources underpins prosperity and peace for all. It demands increased funding; more data-driven decisionmaking; skilled workforce development; innovative technology, including artificial intelligence (AI); and robust cross-sector collaboration. Coordinated global action on integrated water management to address climate change impacts as well as better management of shared waters are also key

Targets

Target Description
6.1

By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.

6.2

By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.

6.3

By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.

6.4

By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

6.5

By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.

6.6

By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.

6.7

By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies.

6.8

Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.

Some suggestions from The Global Goals for things you can do to engage with this goal.

4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services.
Lend your voice to talk about the lack of toilets in many communities around the world!

Run a campaign on hygiene.
Raise awareness about the hygiene issues in your community through social media, school/university campaign or even a campaign in the neighborhood you live in.

Don’t overuse water.
Make sure to close a tap when washing dishes, take short showers – Bathtubs require gallons more water than a 5-10 minute shower. Consider getting a water meter to be aware of your water usage.

Organize a clean up project for rivers and oceans.
Engage your whole community to clean up a local river, seaside or an ocean.
