GIS Day @ KPU 2016

GIS Day @ KPU 2016

Kwantlen Library was proud to present the first GIS Day @ KPU event on November 16, 2016. GIS Day is an annual worldwide celebration for users of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.

GIS Day began with a keynote presentation by Bill McKay, GIS Manager – City of Surrey GIS Section. Bill's insightful presentation gave participants an overall sense of the type of work done by City of Surrey GIS Department, and highlighted some recent key projects including COSMOS (City of Surrey Mapping Online System), and the City of Surrey Open Data Portal. Bill also offered helpful advice and tips to students interested in pursuing a career in GIS.

The keynote presentation was followed by a Meet and Greet networking session where KPU faculty, staff, and students with an interest in GIS had the opportunity to share ideas, and to chat with GIS professionals.

GIS Day concluded with an Introduction to ArcGIS Online workshop. KPU Librarians Andre Iwanchuk and Chris Burns taught this hands-on workshop aimed at participants who are new to GIS. Participants learned about the many features of the freely available web-based ArcGIS Online system, and created a map and shared it on the web.
