Zotero

How to use the Zotero citation management tool

Do I need to set up an account?

You will need a free Zotero account if you want to:

  • sync (back-up) your Zotero library and files to the cloud-based Zotero servers,
  • access your Zotero library from any device, or
  • create or join group Zotero libraries with other people.

If you don't plan to use these features, or do not want your data to be hosted on Zotero's servers, you do NOT need to create a Zotero account.

Create a Zotero Account

1. There are several ways to set up an account in Zotero.  If you have not already set up an account, one way to do this is by going to the Zotero website, and clicking Log In in the upper right corner of the page.

2.  From the Login screen, click on "Register for a free account".

3. This link takes you to a Zotero account registration page.  Choose whatever username and email address you want to start an account. You can change the email address later, if you wish.

4.  Once you have filled out all the information and clicked “Register” a new window will load. If it looks like the screenshot below, your account has been successfully created.

5.  Navigate to your email and click on the email from Zotero. Once open, click on the validation link.

6. Clicking on the link should take you to a new window and you should be logged into the web version of Zotero.
7. Congratulations you are now registered for a Zotero account.
8. Once you have created an account, download the Zotero desktop app as this works better than the web version.

Troubleshooting Zotero account setup problems

  1. Forgot your password - if you have forgotten your password, choose "forgot your password?" from the login page. Zotero will send you an email with steps for setting up a new password.
  2. You receive a message that an email already exists for that account - the most likely scenario is that you set up an account several years ago. Choose "forgot your password?" from the login page. Zotero will send you an email with steps for setting up a new password and then you should be able to proceed with using that email address for your account.
  3. You receive a message that an email already exists for that account, but you didn't use that address before - if you have never set up an account in Zotero before, but receive a message that email already exists for that account, email registration@zotero.org so they can help you manage your account set up.
