Data Services

Lists Canadian data sources available to KPU users, as well as tools for working with datasets.

Statistical analysis software available at KPU

Excel is:

Excel logo

  • installed on all student workstations
  • available to all students and faculty as a Microsoft 365 browser app or for download to your computer
  • the format used for some Statistics Canada files (e.g. Justice tables) and BC STATS, as well as some data from international agencies (e.g. OECD)

SPSS is:

  • installed on all student workstations.
  • a powerful program used to analyze 'raw' microdata files in plain text (.TXT) or Comma Separated Variable (.CSV) formats. 
  • the most commonly used statistical analysis software in the Social Sciences, especially in Psychology.

 

An open source alternative to SPSS is PSPP.

Beyond 20/20 (B2020) is:

Beyond 20/20 software logo

      • a software program which allows users to 'slice-and-dice' Statcan tables to a much greater degree than is possible with the interface on the Statcan website
      • installed on all student workstations
      • available as a PC-only version to download for free.

Many of Statistics Canada's files are in Beyond 20/20 (.IVT) format.
