May 5 is Red Dress Day

May 5 is Red Dress Day.

This is a national day to remember, acknowledge, and honour missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples (MMIWG2S+). The symbol of the red dress is attributed to Métis artist, Jaime Black-Morsette, and their REDress Project, which began in 2010.

KPU Library has a display at Surrey campus library for the week featuring information and books on this difficult topic. We are grateful to be able to once again display the award-winning, striking red dress by Jennifer Lamont, a Métis artist and Wilson School of Design graduate. This dress was last displayed at the library in 2022 after it won an award in the Our Social Fabric, Upcycled Design Competition. The display raises awareness about MMIWG2S+ and Red Dress Day, and KPU Library invites our community to reflect, educate, promote awareness and take action on this important day and topic.

More information and books can be found on our MMIWG2S+ libguide page.
