In APA, how do I cite a...

Direct quotation – with page numbers

When quoting directly, always provide the author, year, and page number of the quotation

  • When a quote is on one page, use “p.” (e.g., p. 25, p. S41, p. e221).
  • When a quote starts on one page and continues on the next, use “pp.” with a dash between the numbers (e.g., pp. 34–35).
  • When a quote starts on one page, but continues on a page further back, use a comma between the page numbers (e.g., pp. 67, 72).

Direct quotation – no page numbers:

When quoting directly from material that does not contain page numbers provide readers with another way of locating the quoted passage.

For written works such as webpages, websites, some ebooks, provide:

  • a section heading or paragraph number

For audiovisual works such as audiobooks, YouTube videos, TED talks, TV shows, provide:

  • a time-stamp
