Ebooks at KPU Library

Linking to Print Records in the Catalogue

  1. Locate your item by searching the library catalogue.
  2. Look at the Detail display of the record.
  3. Locate the work Permalink in the light grey tool above the actual record display, and select it.
  4. Copy the URL from the pop up box that results.

Remember to replace the long permalink with the title of the book.

Example of a permanent link to a book record:

  • A title search for the book Revoluationary Road brings up the permalink https://fire.kpu.ca:443/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/0/0/57/5/3?searchdata1=281681{CKEY}&searchfield1=GENERAL^SUBJECT^GENERAL^^&user_id=WEBSERVER
  • Remember to rename the link to the title of the book so that it looks like this:
    Revolutionary Road

Using a permalink will give your students the current status of the book (ie. whether it is on the shelves or checked out to a user).

  1. Locate your item by searching the library catalogue.
  2. Look at the Detail display of the record.
  3. Locate the work Permalink in the light grey tool above the actual record display, and select it.
  4. Copy the URL from the pop up box that results.

Example of a permanent link to an ebook record

  • "Becoming a person of influence : how to positively impact the lives of others" by John C. Maxwell .
  • The permalink record for the above book is:
    https://fire.kpu.ca:443/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/0/0/57/5/3?searchdata1=270020{CKEY}&searchfield1=GENERAL^SUBJECT^GENERAL^^&user_id=WEBSERVER.
  • It can be renamed to the title of the book in Moodle so that the link looks like this:
Becoming a Person of Influence: How to Positively Impact the Lives of Others

Note: for ebooks, the students will still need to select the "online access" prompt from the record to view full text. If they are off campus, they will be prompted to login at that point.

Using a permalink will give your students the current status of the book (ie. whether it is on the shelves or checked out to a user).

Linking to Subject Searches in the Library Catalogue

You can create links to subject searches within our catalogue.

  1. Login to the catalogue
  2. Enter your subject search terms in the catalogue search box. Remember to select the 'subject' category from the drop down menu to the right of the search box.
  3. Locate the work Permalink in the light grey tool above the actual record display, and select it.
  4. Copy the URL from the pop up box that results.

Example

This is a canned search to items within the catalogue found on the topic of fashion and design. This list will be automatically updated as more items are added to our catalogue on the topic.

Linking to the Catalogue

Perhaps you prefer that students search the catalogue independently for material. If that's the case, simply supply a link to the catalogue by following these steps:

  1. Select the text in your Moodle site that you would like linked to the catalogue.
  2. Click on the Link icon from within the Moodle editor bar
  3. Enter the following code in the URL section: https://kpu.ent.sirsidynix.net/client/en_CA/default and hit save.

Your students will be taken to the front search screen of our Library catalogue to perform their own research.
