APA Citation: Websites & Social Media

Websites & Social Media

  • These works also include news from news websites (see CBC News example below) but not articles from online newspapers (like the Vancouver Sun)
  • If there is no author, start with the title; if there is no date, use (n.d.)
  • If the author and publisher are the same, omit the site publisher info to avoid repetition (see WHO example below)
  • Use a retrieval date only if the content is likely to change

           Note: if quoting also include a page number or other locator, for example a section title, heading or paragraph

   

  • Included here are social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.. If you only link to other content from these sites, then just cite the content you use, not how you got to it
  • Include the text of a social media post up to the first 20 words as the title; include a descriptive label of audiovisuals after the title in square brackets if there are any, for example [Thumbnail with link attached]; do not alter the spelling and if possible; replicate emojis or provide the emoji's name in square brackets, for example [winking face]; see here for emoji names
