MLA Citation: Articles

Articles

  • Authors:  if a newspaper article shows an agency like Reuters or Associated Press, but no personal author, treat the article as anonymous and begin the entry with the article’s title.
  • Titles: the title of the article is in regular script and enclosed in "quotation marks"; the title of the journal, magazine or newspaper is in italics; all words are capitalized except a, an, the, of, on, etc., unless they are the first word
  • Volume is written as vol. xx; issue is written as no. xx; a single page number is written as p. x and page ranges as pp. xx-xx
  • Pages: if an article is not printed on consecutive pages (e.g. it starts on page F1, but continues on page F12), write only the first page number, followed by a plus sign (e.g. F1+); if an article consists of only one page, put it in the reference list entry, but omit the page number in the in-text citation (as in the Penner example)
  • Date: give the date as published (for example, month/season/day); months longer than four letters are abbreviated
  • For articles found in a KPU database, include the publication platform name and the DOI number (xxxxx) if available; use the following format: https://doi.org/xxxxx; if there is no DOI, look for a permalink; if there is neither a DOI nor a permalink, include the URL or the platform's generic search/login page, for example: search.ebscohost.com (omit http:// or https:// for URLs)
  • For articles from the open Web, the DOI, permalink or URL are sufficient as a location and no page numbers are necessary; you can omit http(s)://
  • Articles with Article numbers where each article starts with page 1, omit both the article number and page number. Example here
