Paraphrases

RULE: For paraphrases, provide the author and year. A page number or other locator is not required, but APA encourages you to include one anyway if it helps readers find the passage easier in a long work (APA 6.04), and your instructor may also ask you to do so for paraphrases. How these elements are arranged, depends on your sentence structure.


EXAMPLE:

The speed of human cultural evolution is linked to the turnover rate of cultural entities (Smail, 2008).

Smail (2008) suggested that the speed of human cultural evolution is linked to the turnover rate of cultural entities.
