Welcome

This guide lists selected print and electronic information sources available for French, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese.

French is an official language in more than 30 countries on five continents and as the second official language of Canada. It offers career opportunities in a multitude of fields such as education, government, business, culture and art, travel and tourism.

Spanish is an official language in 21 countries and the second most spoken language in the world after Chinese. It is the fastest growing language in Canada. In the US, there are already more than 40 million Spanish speakers, and this number is projected to grow to about 130 million by 2050.

Japanese opens up diverse career opportunities for students in tourism, hospitality, business and trade, to name a few.

Mandarin has more native speakers in the world than any other language, including English. It is the official language of the People's Republic of China & Taiwan, one of the major languages in SE Asia and one of the five official working languages of the UN.

As you learn another language and learn about other cultures, your appreciation and understanding of the norms and values of these cultures will increase.
